What does plaster-in mean?

The outer frame or flange is finished into the surrounding surface. What happens to the face depends on the model: a full plaster-in grille is finished across its face, while a magnetic removable grille remains a separate piece. Follow the finish instructions for the selected SKU.

Which grilles can I paint or plaster over?

HiFi’s full plaster-in register models are designed for the finish to continue across the grille face; they remain fixed after finishing. On magnetic removable models, the fixed frame is plastered in while the grille stays removable. Selected inset grilles can be painted to match or contrast with the room. Use the selected model’s instructions and lip-height option for the intended finish. Keep the airflow openings clear and preserve any removable seam.

Is the finished opening a grille or an open hole?

It depends on the model. Some faces are an open pattern or hole with no applied rim. Others have a grille or an inset lid, including magnetic removable lids with an intentional seam. That seam is a different detail from the plaster-in flange. Not every model is grille-free.

Conventional ducted or high-velocity: which range do I need?

They are separate collections. Conventional ducted outlets match conventional connections. High-velocity outlets match small-duct high-velocity systems. Choose the range that matches the system on the drawing, then the exact model and connection. A similar look in a photograph is not enough.

Does a round size by itself mean the outlet will fit?

No. Diameter is one measurement. Compatibility also depends on the connection type, the outlet configuration, cavity depth, finish thickness, and the airflow requirement for that location. Match the selected model to the actual duct connection.

How should I choose the visible design?

Choose what the finished room should show: a quiet opening that recedes into the surface, or a deliberate pattern. Then match connection, installation stage, and access to the project. Find your vent narrows the family; the product page confirms the model.

Can I specify from a lookbook photograph?

Use the lookbook as design inspiration, not as a certification or a substitute for the selected model. An engineer confirms airflow and application requirements. See the lookbook.

Installation and finish

What is the difference between rough-in and push-through?

They are installation choices. Rough-in is placed before the surface closes. Push-through is installed through a finished surface. The right choice depends on the selected model, access, and the stage of the job.

Are straight and 90-degree the same as the connection type?

No. Straight versus 90-degree describes the outlet configuration. Clamp versus a system-specific twist connection describes how the outlet joins the duct. Record both choices on the specification.

Where are the installation guides and videos?

The installation hub groups one-page guides and short videos by product family. Start with your family, then check the model and installation method covered by the guide.

What cutout size and screw direction should I use?

Use the cutout and mounting detail in the selected model’s guide or drawing. Confirm the substrate and finish thickness before cutting. If the exact model is not covered in the hub, contact us with its product or variant reference.

What do I need before the flange is finished?

The actual model drawing, the duct connection, cavity and finish thickness, access, and the mechanical airflow requirement. Keep mud and paint out of the air passages. Follow the finishing notes for that product.

Should the air slots be plastered over?

Keep the air openings clear. On a full plaster-in model, the finish can continue across the solid grille face as specified, but it must not fill the slots. On a removable model, finish the fixed frame and preserve the lid’s removable seam.

Cleaning and access

How do I clean a magnetic removable model?

Lift the grille or lid, clean it, and set it back. Do not seal the removable seam or the air passages. Follow the finishing and care notes for that model. This does not apply to fixed versions.

How do I clean a fixed model?

Fixed surfaces remain in place for cleaning. Keep the visible air passages clear and follow the care guidance for the selected model and finish. If you are unsure about a cleaning product, ask us before using it.

Is a remote-fan bathroom outlet a replacement cover for a ceiling fan?

No. Four-inch fixed and magnetic removable round direct-connect models list remote and inline-fan bathroom applications. They are outlets. The fan motor sits elsewhere in the ductwork. They are not universal replacement covers for ceiling-mounted fans.

Specification and commercial

What airflow or noise data can I use?

Ask for information for the model you plan to specify, including airflow and pressure-drop data where available. Confirm the airflow target with the mechanical designer. Available evidence varies by model, and sound depends on the fan, ductwork, and complete installation.

What should a bid or specification include?

Attach the selected model, not only a family name:

• Quantities with a delivery schedule

Can I plan a commercial or multifamily project?

Yes. Consider HiFi for apartments, hotels, restaurants, galleries, and other commercial interiors as well as homes. Share the project’s mechanical requirements, finish, quantities, and schedule so the appropriate models can be confirmed.

Who confirms airflow and application?

The mechanical designer or engineer for the project. Design inspiration on this site is not a certification.
